What is Sony Reader ?

The Sony Reader is a dedicated eBook reading device, which comes in a number of versions PRS500 (older version), the PRS505, the PRS700, and the newer PRS300 (pocket 5") and the PRS600 (Touch).

The Sony Reader uses eInk technology and is in direct competition to the Amazon Kindle.

The Sony Reader is easy to use and is dependent on a computer to download eBooks. This makes it easy to use outside of the USA.

My preferred reader is the Sony PRS300 Pocket (which has the 5" screen as opposed to the other readers which are 6") as I find it easier to hold in bed and more compact to take with me wherever I go. It is easy to read in all light modes (except dark).

Sony Reader Outside the USA

Sony Reader works fine outside of the USA. As I only read lesfic on my Sony Reader, I do not need to access the Sony eBook store.

I purchase mobipocket files (.prc or .mobi) and convert them to Sony file (.ePub or .lrf) using Calibre.

I use the USB cable to sync my mac or PC with the Sony Reader to transfer eBooks.

Sony Reader is also available in Canada with a 12 month warranty.

Sony expect to release its Sony Reader to Europe in the near future.

Sony Reader is not available in Australia, I purchase mine from a supplier in the USA via eBay.

Using CALIBRE to Convert & Load eBooks to Sony Reader

In my humble opinion, Calibre is one of the best free programs on the internet for owners of the Sony Reader. I have tested Calibre on my PC (windows XP and Windows Vista), my Asus eeePC (linux) and my Mac (OSX 10.4 Tiger and 10.5 Leopard) and it works great on all these platforms.

calibre is an e-book library management application. It is free, open source and cross-platform in design and works on Linux, OSX and Windows. It has been created by Kovid Goyal and he continues to improve the program. He has designed this program by himself and receives no royalties for its use of distribution. He does have a donations area on his site and once you have used the program I am sure, like me, you will be more than happy to make a donation.

Calibre is meant to be a complete e-library solution and thus includes, library management, format conversion, news feeds to eBook conversion as well as device sync features. It can convert from HTML, LIT, RTF, TXT, MOBI, and PDF.

Calibre can be used as a LRF viewer which is particularly useful for Sony Portable Reader owners who are not using windows.

Calibre can convert multi format to multi format, I convert .mobi to ePub using calibre for download to my sony reader.

Calibre is available for free download from the following link: http://calibre.kovidgoyal.net/

The Calibre User Guide on the Calibre home page is easy to follow and very informative.

I have created a download guide for loading Calibre to PC

Sony Reader on Mac

Sony Reader software does not work on the Mac, but you can use the Sony Reader with mac by using the Calibre software instead. I use my Sony Reader with my mac when I go away.

I have created a download guide for loading Calibre to mac.

Sony 505 using mac

Calibre can be used as an eBook reading program

Once you have downloaded and converted your eBook to Calibre, select View and your eBook will open for your reading pleasure.

This program is brilliant for mac users.

Sony Reader V's Kindle

My thoughts on Kindle V's Sony are based on the fact that I live outside of the USA.
